Natural Capital Officer
Salary: £35,000 to £38,249 p.a.
5-year Fixed Term Contract
Full Time 37.5hrs (hybrid working available)
Office base: Newton Stewart, Dumfries and Galloway
Covering 9,700 sq km of land and sea, the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere was the first UNESCO Biosphere in Scotland and offers an opportunity to lead on landscape scale nature recovery that will be good for nature, good for people and good for the local economy. 69% of the Biosphere area lies within Scotland’s first Natural Capital Innovation Zone an area which is also focussed on delivery of Scotland’s first Regional Land Use Framework. Together these make the UNESCO Biosphere an exciting and dynamic place to work as multiple partners come together to explore new approaches to addressing the twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change at scale in the region.
The Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal is an exciting new partnership to unlock the potential for sustainable and inclusive economic growth across the South of Scotland and North of England. One component of this effort is the Natural Capital Scotland Programme, made up of several natural capital pilot projects including the Embedding Agricultural Resilience for a Productive Future with On-farm Plans Integrated with Nature (OPIN) project led by our UNESCO Biosphere in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Council.
We are looking to recruit a dedicated Natural Capital Officer to lead on delivery of this exciting new project. You’ll need to have a good knowledge and understanding of natural capital, audit methodologies, and agricultural operations along with experience of engaging with farmers and working in partnership with a broad spectrum of partners. You’ll oversee the development and delivery of the audits along with holistic farm plans. You’ll then work with the farms to pilot a range of nature positive interventions to enhance the natural capital whilst also retaining a productive farm business, providing reports of the outcomes and outputs.
Working as part of our Nature Recovery Team, alongside colleagues with specialisms in Community and Business development, there is flexibility for hybrid working.
